AI and Dynamical Systems: New Paradigms for Control and Robotics

DESCRIPTION

The primary objective of this chair is to investigate ways in which the powerful tools of artificial intelligence can be used to expand the scope of application and improve the performance of dynamical systems in order to handle complex relationships that cannot be easily modeled using knowledge-based equations.

More specifically, we develop new paradigms and/or methodologies for control systems and robotics using AI methods. Motivated by recent improvements to classical control algorithms achieved by incorporating AI methods and algorithms, we address fundamental issues in control systems and robotics.

By doing so, we will overcome the limitations of classical control theory by incorporating AI into the control loop and by applying AI to the system dynamics. Furthermore, for many problems—such as the calibration of sensors and actuators, modeling under uncertainty, and optimal uncertainty-aware control—AI methods have been recognized as essential approaches for achieving satisfactory results.

As part of the ultimate goal of this chair, we will develop dynamic methodologies for AI methods and algorithms that are sometimes based on static relationships.

ACTIVITIES

This chair supports research activities in control and robotic dynamical systems and in AI, in particular by providing grants to Ph.D. students and funding for postdoctoral positions. It brings together researchers and students with support from the University of Grenoble Alpes, the CNRS, and INRIA (at GIPSA-Lab, INRIA Grenoble, and LIG), as well as industrial partners (including Schneider and Sysnav, among others).

CHAIR EVENTS

This research group organizes meetings that feature internal presentations and scientific discussions. Members attend international conferences and are also frequently invited to give seminars and lectures related to their work within the group (such as at the IEEE Columbian Control Conference and the 14th ESA Workshop on Avionics, Data, Control, and Software Systems).
