Multidisciplinary Institute in Artificial intelligence
The MIAI Cluster (Multidisciplinary Institute in Artificial Intelligence) is one of the nine French AI Clusters dedicated to artificial intelligence research, innovation, and education. Coordinated by Université Grenoble Alpes and developed in collaboration with Université Clermont Auvergne and Université Savoie Mont Blanc, the institute brings together researchers, companies, public institutions, startups, and students to address the major scientific, technological, and societal challenges of AI.
MIAI Cluster builds upon the MIAI legacy of the French national 3IA initiative (“Interdisciplinary Institutes for Artificial Intelligence”), launched to position France among the world leaders in AI research and innovation. Today, the cluster expands this ambition by strengthening collaborations across the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and developing a multidisciplinary and internationally connected AI ecosystem.
Research is at the heart of MIAI Cluster IA. The institute supports high-level scientific projects through competitive calls for AI chairs, exploratory projects, interdisciplinary initiatives, and industrial collaborations. Its research activities cover a wide range of topics including machine learning, generative AI, natural language processing, trustworthy AI, robotics, computer vision, health, education, environment, and Industry 4.0.
MIAI Cluster IA actively promotes technology transfer and collaboration between academia and industry. The institute supports innovation through industrial chairs, Proof-of-Concept projects and strategic partnerships with companies ranging from SMEs to major international groups.
The cluster also contributes to the emergence and visibility of AI startups through dedicated support and labeling initiatives. By connecting researchers with industrial and societal needs, MIAI Cluster helps transform scientific advances into real-world applications and innovation opportunities.
These collaborations enable companies and institutions to access cutting-edge AI expertise while offering researchers new opportunities to develop impactful applications for their research work.
Through the EFELIA-MIAI program, the institute develops AI education and training at all levels. MIAI Cluster IA supports academic programs in artificial intelligence, interdisciplinary curricula, continuing education for professionals, online self-training resources, and public awareness initiatives.
The institute also offers excellence scholarships for French and international students pursuing AI-related studies within its partner universities. These programs aim to train the next generation of AI researchers, engineers, and decision-makers while making AI knowledge accessible to a broader audience.
In addition to higher education, MIAI Cluster organizes outreach activities, conferences, workshops, and events dedicated to citizens, educators, and professionals to encourage informed discussions about the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence.
